“The Material World Was Not Created To Give Your Heart Peace”

When we think of the things of this world, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Probably something you enjoy, physical pieces, jobs, sports, clothes, etc. It would be impossible not to enjoy at least one of these things. How we want them and view those things are what changes things. I think it is fair to admit that our love for possessions and money can often overwhelm us or take over our minds and hearts. We are human; it is natural to feel this way.

As a Christian and a college student, this is a massive struggle in my life. The love for fashion and beauty drives me up a wall. I have to remind myself of who and what is essential continually.

In his book Sex and money, Paul David Tripp writes, “the material world was designed to be one big finger that points you to the place where your heart will only ever find its peace and rest.”

So is it a bad thing to enjoy the things we really really love in this world? Simply put, no. It’s a state of our hearts and response to Jesus’s ultimate authority and provision in our lives.

I think Tripp is correct that it should be a big finger pointing to God, and that should be an encouraging way to look at this heart problem. Let all we do be glorifying and honoring to the Lord. As I pray, let this be a prayer you continuously think about and dwell on.
